SAW enters its 10th Season!
Starting in 2008, children participating in over 40 Saturday Archaeology Workshops with The Higgins Art Gallery & Museum, Bedford and Albion Archaeology, have been investigating aspects of archaeology with themes as diverse as Japanese archaeology; burial practices; treasure and adornment; geography and stratigraphy; identifying ceramics and boats in archaeology.
Trips have been organised to Flag Fen, the Museum of London and the London Archaeological Archives and Research Centre and a dozen other museums, archives, or historic sites, including a local ‘Time Team’ dig.
Participants have been busy learning an extensive range of archaeological skills, including: archaeological drawing and photography; surveying techniques; how to excavate and clean artefacts and recording archaeological excavations.
Along the way, participants have made replicas and models; created an Iron Age roundhouse using wattle and daub; put on an archaeology exhibition at Bedford Museum; dressed up as Iron Age people at a re-enactment event and have excavated at six archaeological sites in Bedfordshire and elsewhere, thanks to our friends at Albion Archaeology.
If you’ve got any archaeological curiosity, come along and join in!
